Alessano – Historical background

The town of Alessano, in whose territory the hamlet of Montesardo falls, overlooks the Adriatic Sea with the Novaglie marina. Its origins are uncertain but traces are visible that make it go back to the Messapians.

Recent evidence has been discovered, such as the remains of city walls dating back to the 4th century BC, tombs, foundations of buildings, which show how at that time there was a large urban settlement. On the documents of the Roman period MonsArduus is marked on the route of the Via Traiana. In the area of Macurano there is a rock settlement in which there are the caves that have hosted the Basilian monks with the remains of oil mills.
